Celebrated parent's 35th wedding anniversary. By American standards, that's really really long. Supposed to be, its just the family, but plans were foiled when Aunt called cuz she learned from a friend that it was parent's anniversary. It would already be awkward if we didn't invite her since we all live in the same house.
Anyway, eating out with her is half fun and half embarrassing. Fun because she's a cook and adventurous when it comes to food. Embarrassing, when it comes to paying. She owns a fast food store, which is different from a sit-in resto where there are servers. I think some people have their own rules when it comes to tipping. I don't usually tip on fast food restaurants, mainly because I'm not receiving any extra service aside from that is supposed to be received by a customer when ordering in such a place. Food is already prepared and not being brought to your table. Not unless I'm receiving an additional service, like add-ons on your coffee order (like my friend ordering at Starbucks: Java Chip Mocha Frap, extra Java chips, caramel around the cup, drizzle blah blah... o_o I'm happy with my Green Tea Latte or Frap), special instructions, requests and/or asking what food they recommend or something like that.
Now, eating at a dine-in/sit-in (table service) resto is different because there would be a server waiting at your table and food's prepared when ordered (well supposed to be xD). So the check/bill comes and I asked Aunt on how much should I add for the tip, and she told me to just even out the amount. Then she goes ranting about not receiving tips at her fast food restaurant. (.....) It's a good thing that it's just us because that's just wrong. I know in the PH it's not customary to give tips but where's not there. (Well I'm not sure, but maybe on those upscale restaurants and hotels). I hid the bill from her and added the minimum tip % (Sorry folks, we're not rich people to tip exuberantly) before I hear anymore complaints from her. I just find it hard to bring people like her at restaurants with table service because you hear stuff similar to that, and to me in a way is embarrassing, I am a deviant, but I give to others what is due.
On another note. I kid when I say on FB to treat me to this. If I can't afford it I don't buy or go, and If I do go to some place, I come prepared though I would admit I am stingy and have a great sense of control on my spending. Well maybe if I need it, I might not come by this place anytime soon and/or I find it cute (baw, my weakness...). So please don't call me a hypocrite when this guy annoyed me to hell, and I ended up really telling him upfront what I think about him. My female friend, Cessy is a workaholic, and have the tendency to be too generous with her friends. I kept telling her, save your money for a rainy day, stop being so overly generous that her friends are taking advantage of her.
After watching a movie, knowing that she came straight from work (and even got lost going to the theater) is tired and hungry. So I asked her if she wants grab something before going home. It was actually intended mainly out of concern to her since she's been skipping meals, and I was willing to accompany her. Out of courtesy, we asked if the other people in the group are hungry and wants to join us, but that doesn't necessarily means we're paying for their food. If you're hungry, join us, pay for your food. If you're hungry and doesn't have enough money, I'm willing to lend you money for food. If you're not hungry, but still want to join us, I'm not gonna make you look stupid, I'm happy to share with you my food if you're okay with it.
But here's a guy who's able, who has no responsibility, living with his parents, his parents paying off everything, already in college, telling Cessy (repeating it too) that she's gonna pay for his food. Cessy on the other hand has tons of responsibility on her hands, is paying for her own college, helping her parents pay the rent & etc. That pissed me off. Knowing Cessy, she's not gonna say it. So I told him off. Really... that guy has no shame. -end of rant-
To put a smile on your face, and it's a true story~
After eating at a restaurant, this guy acquaintance exclaimed, "Who the hell ordered gratuity?!"
